Through partnership, Habitat Greensboro builds community. There may be no better example of the strength of this commitment than the Eastside Park Community Center, which was born of the dreams and determination of community residents, led by the late Estella Marie Stamey.

In the early ’90s, the City of Greensboro recognized development needs for the Eastside Park Community. A public-private partnership was born, bringing together area nonprofits, including Habitat Greensboro, allowing residents to lead efforts to revitalize the community.

In partnership with five other area nonprofits, Habitat Greensboro worked with the local community to increase access to affordable housing by constructing single-family homes and, later, the construction of 20 townhomes.

As home construction brought more families to the area, Marie Stamey recognized a need for a centralized gathering space for the neighborhood’s youth. Mobilizing the community to advocate to the Greensboro City Council, Stamey’s efforts led to the construction of Eastside Community Center in 2002 through a partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Greensboro, Community Housing Solutions, and the City of Greensboro.

Over the years, Eastside Park Community Center has hosted many community events, including National Night Out, neighborhood festivals, and fundraisers. The center has also served as the host location for children’s afterschool tutoring activities.

Maintaining our commitment to community, Habitat Greensboro returned to the Eastside Park Community Center on Tuesday, October 26, to provide the space with a “refresh.” Thanks to a partnership with Lowe’s Home Improvement, who provided materials and volunteers, volunteers pressure washed, pruned, mulched, and raked to ensure that the Community Center’s exterior reflects its beautiful spirit and history.

Say’s Ruthie Richardson-Robinson, Habitat Greensboro Chief Operating Officer, “It was like coming home. Eastside Park Community Center will always be special to our organization, and we are committed to maintaining our ongoing partnership.”
