After years of marriage, during which Bernard supported his wife in completing her college education while raising their two boys, Bernard faced the unexpected challenge of divorce. This led Bernard to a place where he says he wasn’t living as his father taught him, and he knew he needed to turn his life around.
Bernard’s first step was to join Malachi House, a residential non-profit program focused on helping men recover from life-controlling issues. While at Malachi House, Bernard became a leader, running the recovery program’s kitchen. He felt called upon to share his testimony and help others, helping to create the ‘Making a Difference’ outreach ministry in partnership with Greensboro Urban Ministries and Rev. Frank Dew. Through this ministry program, Bernard has helped men gather together to share their challenges and find valuable resources.
As Bernard worked with Rev. Dew, he learned about Habitat Greensboro’s Homeownership Program. In 2002, he took a leap of faith, and at age 50, he applied and was accepted into the program, marking a significant turning point in his life.
“Becoming a homeowner and having something that’s of worth, to share with my family, gives me such a sense of pride. When my grandchildren come over and say, ‘Grandad, I like your place,’ I tell them, ‘Well, one day it’s going to be your place.’ This is a legacy I can hand down and be proud of.”
Despite the hurdles he encountered, Bernard’s dedication to his family and community never wavered. Building on his culinary abilities, Bernard ventured into entrepreneurship by starting his own catering business, eventually leading to collaborations with Habitat Greensboro. Throughout his journey, Bernard remained deeply grateful for the mentorship he received, particularly from his friend Frank Dew.
“I have seen Bernard’s confidence and humility grow. For Bernard, that growth of confidence means a growing awareness of how he has been blessed and how he has blessed others,” says Frank.
