Habitat’s commitment to closing the Black homeownership gap

Advancing Black Homeownership: Habitat Greensboro’s Commitment to Equity and Opportunity

At Habitat Greensboro, we believe in a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Yet, for many Black families, systemic and intentional barriers to homeownership have created significant hurdles that continue to persist today. Practices like redlining, inequitable access to mortgage credit, and exclusionary zoning have not only prevented Black families from securing homes but have also denied them the opportunity to build generational wealth. This opportunity should be available to everyone.

The systematic discrimination numbers speak volumes: Black families are statistically less likely to own homes than white families across the U.S. At Habitat Greensboro, we are proud to be part of the solution, partnering with families to close this homeownership gap. In fiscal year 2021, 43% of families partnered with Habitat for Humanity to build homes identified as Black. While this progress is significant, there is still much work to do.

As a leader in affordable housing and mortgage solutions for the Greensboro community, Habitat Greensboro is uniquely positioned to tackle these challenges head-on. With the support of transformative funding from local donors and sponsors, we’re taking meaningful steps to increase Black homeownership through innovative programs and partnerships.

Our approach includes financial coaching, funding for local affiliates driving equity work, and the development of lending strategies designed to overcome systemic barriers. We are also amplifying the voices of Black homeowners by creating advisory groups to guide our efforts and sharing best practices to preserve affordability and improve outcomes.

This work goes beyond building homes—it’s about breaking down barriers, empowering families, and ensuring everyone has the chance to thrive. Together with our supporters, we are advocating for policies and creating programs that make affordable homeownership a reality for more families.

At Habitat Greensboro, we recognize that the path to equity requires action and accountability. By standing with our community and addressing the systemic inequities in housing, we are building more than homes—we’re building hope, opportunity, and a future where everyone has a fair shot at the American dream.

Join us in this mission as we work to create a world where everyone has access to the stability and prosperity that homeownership provides. Together, we can build stronger communities and a brighter future for all.
