After 15 years of living in public housing, a simple question to a neighbor changed Michelle’s life and put her on the path to homeownership. She recalls seeing her neighbor heading out on a Saturday morning and learned that they were going to complete their sweat equity hours with Habitat. Michelle thought to herself, “Wonderful! I’ve always wanted to be a homeowner!”
She applied to the program, and after being accepted, fully embraced the process, which included homebuyer education classes and completing sweat equity hours on the build site. Michelle learned a great deal about construction, particularly roofing and plumbing, but it was the budgeting classes that she still applies today. She proudly states, “I still do my budget every month.”
Having completed her sweat equity hours before her townhome was finished, Michelle generously donated hours to help other future homebuyers. She has continued this spirit of selflessness and community service by becoming the president of her community’s homeowners’ association. Michelle takes great pride in her Habitat community, acting as a resource for her neighbors and often reminding them of what they learned in their classes and responsibilities as homeowners.
When it comes to homeownership, Michelle absolutely loves it! She encourages others to step out of their comfort zones and explore the possibilities of homeownership, stating, “If others can do it, why can’t you?”
