On Saturday, November 19, Habitat Greensboro dedicated its third home in the Lincoln Heights community. The home was dedicated for Katisha and her nine-year-old daughter, Kamora, and is one of five homes built in partnership with the City of Greensboro as a part of the 2018 tornado recovery efforts.

Ruthie Richardson-Robinson, COO for Habitat Greensboro, began today’s dedication by recognizing the significance of this build, sharing, “This is a project that was done in conjunction with the City of Greensboro. This whole area, this neighborhood of Lincoln Heights, was affected on April 15, 2018, by a tornado that hit the city. And this is the end result, the beautiful home you see behind me.”

Richardson-Robinson continued by thanking the future homeowner, Katisha, offering, “I just like to say thank you so much for Katisha, and her daughter, for allowing us to be part of your journey to homeownership. Homeownership, a lot of people think it’s a dream, but it is possible. And it’s through programs like this that we’re able to help Katisha and help others who may be looking for their forever home. Thank you so much.”

Representing the City of Greensboro, Councilmember Sharon Hightower shared, “We are standing on hallowed ground because we are blessed to be rebuilding. We at the City pitched in 100% to ensure that this neighborhood was rebuilt … I want to thank Habitat because as we look around this community, we see several Habitat homes. They were willing to help us rebuild … We are bringing new people in this community. The City is in support of affordable housing. We love to see homeownership. You know that is your generational wealth. This is what you can leave your daughter so that she can make sure that she has a stable life for the future. And that’s what you can offer her. So thank you for investing in us as we invest in you. Thank you, Habitat, for seeing the potential that we know we have over here in East Greensboro. Thank you so much.”

Katisha is very excited about purchasing her home from Habitat Greensboro and providing stability for her daughter. On behalf of herself and her daughter, Katisha shared, “We first like to start off by thanking God. We want to thank Habitat for blessing us with our first home. We also would like to just bask in this great moment. This is awesome. It has been a journey, but I am thankful for this opportunity. It helped to strengthen and build character. I met some wonderful people that I’ve learned a lot from. Our home represents God, love, gratefulness, determination, hard work, and unity. Kamora and I look forward to making many, many, many memories here. And again, I just want to thank you all for helping us turn our dreams into reality.”

Today’s dedication is the culmination of months of work on Katisha’s part to prepare for homeownership through Habitat Greensboro’s Homebuyer Education Program. Within the next few weeks, Katisha will close on her new home and begin paying an affordable mortgage – ensuring that she and her daughter have a safe, stable, and affordable place to live for years to come. All Habitat Greensboro partner families are guaranteed that their mortgage payments will be no more than 30% of their income. This provides families with an opportunity to build wealth and increases opportunities to invest in themselves.
